Adiós a la Sangre
Ruth Somalo's latest work includes the film Performance Uterus and the installation Adiós a la Sangre (2025), it was shown at La Lonja Gallery in Spain.
Adiós a la Sangre (Goodbye to Blood) is a series of five photographs documenting a ritual dance conceived and performed by the artist to prepare for a total hysterectomy and mark her entry into menopause. In this performative act, the body becomes a liminal territory of transition and re-signification, where movement channels memory, loss, and regeneration.
The images, digitally modified to reflect the process of metamorphosis, capture moments of surrender, resistance, and rebirth, evoking the power of ancestral rituals and the dialogue between the personal and the collective, while revealing the violence of removing an organ from the body. Light and composition frame gestures of vulnerability and strength, suggesting transformation as a physical, spiritual, and symbolic process. In this series, photography not only documents but amplifies the choreography, turning it into a visual testimony of a vital passage that challenges taboos surrounding the female body and menopause. The collage-like composition of the photographs is presented to us as a mythopoietic totem, a sacred object of protection.
